FEAST GUILT FREE THIS FESTIVE SEASON

Diet hacks for the festive season
7th September 2019

Come September and it’s raining festivals in India, starting from Ganesh Chaturthi to Diwali and ending with Christmas and New Year’s eve. Add to that, it’s wedding season too, making it all the more difficult to stick to a diet and exercise regimen. Calorie-laden sweet and savoury treats are not easy to resist, especially when in a celebratory mood. Here’s how you can minimize the damage on the weighing scale…

DIET:

Indian mithais are roughly around 250 to 500 calories, making it difficult to keep the weight down.

CHOOSE…

– Sandesh (milk-based) over mawa barfi

– Dry fruit chikki over pastries

– Dhokla over batata vada

– Khandvi over fried mathia

– Ice popsicle/sorbet over an ice cream

– Dark chocolate almond rocks over rasmalai

– Shikanji soda/coconut water over aerated drinks

Tricks to compensate your cheats…

Chances are you will give in and indulge at least once, if not more. Here’s how you can balance it out.

  • Include a first-class protein (like milk, curd, eggs etc) and fibre in all your major meals
  • Replace one meal (ideally dinner) with any one of the options below…
    1. Milk and fruit
    2. Sprout salad and soup
    3. Curd and stir-fry vegetables
    4. Egg salad
    5. Chicken and vegetable soup

EXERCISE:

The festive season demands that you exercise daily, not just to keep your weight in check but also your health.

  • Walk for 45-60 minutes either outdoors or on a treadmill (@5.5km/hr) daily.
  • Or, jog for 30 minutes to burn off those extra calories
